Fallen Patriot Commemoration
This Interactive American Flag is dedicated to:
U.S. Army Sergeant First Class
John W. Marshall of Los Angeles, CA
[ At the time, reportedly oldest combatant KIA during GWOT's OIF ]
Picture
SFC Marshall, 50, served in Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF)
with 3rd Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division from Ft. Stewart, GA
Killed in action (KIA), on April 8, 2003, by a rocket-propelled grenade (RPG) during an ambush in Baghdad, Iraq

Star-Spangled Inspirational Quote and Poem about SFC Marshall:
...  from his brother, James ...
He told family members he could not let the young soldiers in his platoon go to war without him.
"I think he felt really committed to seeing that these young men would perform under the stress of war.  It meant giving his own life to see that they could be protected and our freedoms could be protected."

... from his daughter, Jennifer - courtesy of Fallen Heroes Memorial ...
Freedom Soldier

I dream at night with memories of my dad
I remember how funny he was and the good times we all had.
My dad was my hero just like the fathers of so many others
And that's why my mind gave birth to the words of "Freedom Soldier"
These words I write to honor my father and his fallen brothers.
My mom was told he was at his best, they said he died protecting the rest
I've heard them say he went beyond duty's call---
from my dad nothing but his very best
My dad was a son, a brother, a husband, a father and loved by us all---
my dad, a soldier, he stood quite tall,
A soldier who loved his family,
A soldier that sometimes prayed,
A soldier whom I wish could have stayed.
A soldier that served extremely well,
A soldier who risked it all as his fellow men will tell,
A soldier that stood fearless and fought wherever told to go,
A soldier that helped win freedom for a people he did not even know
A soldier that unfortunately will never watch me grow.
A soldier whose humor, smiles and caring glances are no longer here for us to see,
A soldier who now shares with God what he can never again share with me,
A soldier that I want all to remember
For he was, in the month of April, my tragedy, my 9/11 of September.

In loving memory of SFC. John W. Marshall, my dad

The personal Patriot(s) remembered by this Interactive American Flag include(s):
U.S. Army (Retired) Lieutenant Colonel
Edward J. Sweeney Jr.
Picture
Vietnam Veteran from Boston, Massachusetts
20 year Army career (1967-1987) in Aviation and Corps of Engineers
Awarded Silver Star, Bronze Star, and 45 Air Medals while serving as scout helicopter pilot ( shot down 3 times ;) in Vietnam
Died December 8, 2008, age 62, of a Vietnam War related illness

Survived by wife, Ellen Sweeney, two children and three grandchildren
We honor and thank U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel Ed Sweeney Jr. for defending our freedoms and fighting to liberate the lives of others.

Ed Sweeney Jr. inspires us with his leadership - how he looked out for the welfare of his men:
Chief Warrant Officer Frank Glenn, a fellow Vietnam War scout helicopter pilot of Platoon Leader Ed Sweeney, repeated Captain Sweeney's directive to his 9 scout pilots, "Don't be a cowboy, don't take any unnecessary risks, no hot-dogging, and don't get your crew killed.  Your job is to return to base everyday."
