Captain John Maloney, age 36, served in Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) Company Commander - Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, based out of Camp Pendleton, Calif.; attached to the 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward) KIA June 16, 2005, by a "massive" IED (Improvised Explosive Device) explosion, while on mounted patrol in Ar Ramadi, Iraq
We honor and thank U.S. Marine Captain John Maloney for defending our freedoms and fighting to liberate the lives of others.
John W. Maloney Born on November 22, 1968 in Los Angeles, CA Grew up in Chicopee, MA after moving there at age 3 1986 Graduate of Chicopee High School Enlisted in Marine Corps as Infantryman in 1987 Deployed overseas 4 times, in his first 6 years within the FMF (Fleet Marine Force), to Okinawa (2x), Gulf War, and Somalia Quickly rose through the ranks via Meritorious Promotions to Sergeant Selected to Marine Enlisted Commissioning Entry Program in 1994 to become a Marine Officer Attended University of Colorado at Boulder and earned a degree in Psychology in August 1996 Always accelerated and finished at top of his Marine Officer training classes - top 10% at Officer Candidate School, Officer Basic School, and Expeditionary Warfare School Served from as Infantry Officer and deployed numerous times between 1997 to 2005
[ US Marine Capt Maloney leading delivery of $500K+ in medical supplies to Iraq's Ar Ramadi Maternity & Children's Hospital because he wanted to "show the Iraqi people that the Marines mean well." ]
During combat operations in Iraq, he commanded his reinforced company independently at the combat outpost Camp Snake Pit. Capt. Maloney led from the front and inspired his Marine Company - all the way until his heroic death on June 16, 2005 Awarded the prestigious Leftwich Trophy for Outstanding Leadership (first-ever to receive it posthumously) Survived by wife Michelle, his adoring children Nathaniel (age 6 upon Maloney's death in 2005) and McKenna (age 1), his caring mother Lydia Maloney, his proud father John Maloney, and his admiring brothers Jason, Justin, and James

Maloney's Bronze Star (with Valor device) Citation: “Suspecting an ambush on his egress route, he instinctively placed his vehicle at the front of the company and began to lead them out of the danger zone. As he personally led his men out of harm’s way, a massive [roadside bomb] destroyed his vehicle and killed him,” the citation reads. “His selfless leadership continued to inspire his Marines as they fought for the next two hours against heavy machinegun, rocket propelled grenade and mortar fire.”
