Capt. Maloney's Bronze Star Citation (excerpt): “Suspecting an ambush on his egress route, he instinctively placed his vehicle at the front of the company and began to lead them out of the danger zone. As he personally led his men out of harm’s way, a massive [roadside bomb] destroyed his vehicle and killed him,” the citation reads. “His selfless leadership continued to inspire his Marines as they fought for the next two hours against heavy machinegun, rocket propelled grenade and mortar fire.”
Parting Quote from 1st Sgt Brookman to Capt. Maloney's son: "Your father is a hero," Brookman told then 6-year-old Nathaniel Maloney at Captain John W. Maloney's funeral. "Don't ever forget it."

Captain Maloney, On the surface, you and I seem to have some connections I would have loved to have discussed over a brew or two with you. We're a couple weeks apart in age, raised in Massachusetts, and CU-molded Marines. And as such, I have the utmost respect and appreciation for how you served our Nation and took care of your family. I'm saddened that you weren't able to carry-on with your Marine Corps career and continue to show your distinctive leadership into higher ranks. I'm honored to be a fellow Buff and tell your inspiring story - which truly fulfilled the last stanza of our Marines' Hymn. "Here's health to you and to our Corps which we are proud to serve; In many strife we've fought for life and never lost our nerve. If the Army and the Navy ever look on Heaven's scenes, they will find the streets are guarded by United States Marines." - from Sean on 5/23/22
